Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem has called on the international community to take stronger action to protect the rights of Christians in the Holy Land, ensure humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip, and safeguard freedom of worship in Jerusalem amid the ongoing crisis. The appeal was made during a meeting with members of the diplomatic corps on February 6, 2026, at the residence of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Addressing general consuls and diplomats, the Patriarch spoke of the severe humanitarian consequences of the continuing conflict, with particular emphasis on the situation in Gaza. He noted that civilians—especially women, children, and the elderly—are bearing the brunt of destruction, food shortages, and the lack of medical care. The Church, he said, cannot remain indifferent to human suffering and considers assistance to those affected a direct moral responsibility.

Patriarch Theophilos recalled his recent pastoral visit to Gaza, undertaken together with the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa. He expressed solidarity with Christian communities that continue their social and charitable ministry despite ongoing hostilities, and urged diplomats to support international efforts aimed at the reconstruction of the region and the preservation of interreligious dialogue.

The Patriarch also drew attention to developments in the West Bank, voicing concern over an increase in attacks by Israeli settlers on Christian villages, particularly in the areas of Taybeh and Birzeit. He further warned about the expansion of settlements near Beit Sahour, one of the largest Christian towns in the region.

Special emphasis was placed on restrictions on freedom of religion in Jerusalem. According to Patriarch Theophilos, recent measures have imposed strict limits on the number of worshippers allowed to attend services during Holy Week and the celebration of the Holy Fire, disrupted long-standing traditions involving Christian scouts, and involved excessive police actions under the guise of security. He stressed that access to holy sites is a fundamental right enshrined in the centuries-old status quo of the Holy City.

The Patriarch reiterated his appeal for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor for children from Gaza suffering from cancer, so they can receive treatment at Jerusalem’s Augusta Victoria Hospital. He also highlighted ongoing difficulties in obtaining entry permits for teachers and medical personnel, warning that these obstacles are undermining the region’s education and healthcare systems.

“Our mission is healing: to heal bodies, to heal souls, and to defend the dignity that God has bestowed upon every human being,” Patriarch Theophilos said.

Concluding the meeting, he reminded the diplomatic corps of the Gospel words, “Blessed are the peacemakers,” emphasizing that justice, mercy, and a sense of responsibility on the part of the international community remain the only path toward a peace worthy of Jerusalem and the entire Holy Land.
