One of the greatest prophets and the first virgin of the Old Testament. He was born in Tishbah of Gilead in the tribe of Levi 900 years before the birth of Christ. When Elijah was born, his father Sovak had a vision that good-looking men were talking to the baby, swaddling him with fire and feeding him with a flame of fire. From a young age, he settled in the desert and lived a strict life of fasting and prayer. He was called to prophetic ministry during the reign of King Ahab, an idolater who worshipped Baal (the sun) and forced the Jewish people to do the same. The Lord sent Elijah to Ahab and commanded him to predict that if he and his people did not turn to the true God, famine would overtake his kingdom. Ahab disobeyed the prophet, and there was a drought and a great famine in the land. During the famine, Elijah lived for a year in the desert, where crows brought him food, and for more than two years with a widow in Sarepta.
Three and a half years later, Elijah returned to the kingdom of Israel and told the king and all the people that all the troubles of the Israelites were due to the fact that they had forgotten the true God and began to worship the idol of Baal. To prove the Israelites' error, Elijah proposed making two altars, one to Baal and the other to God, and said, "Let us sacrifice, and if fire from heaven descends on the altar of Baal, then he is the true God, and if not, then an idol" (see 3 Samuel 18:21-24). First, they made an altar to Baal, piled firewood, slaughtered an ox, and the priests of Baal began to pray to their idol: "Baal, Baal, send us fire from heaven." But there was no answer, and fire did not descend from heaven onto Baal's altar. In the evening, Elijah made his altar, laid firewood, watered them first with water, and began to pray to God. And suddenly fire fell from the sky and consumed not only the firewood and the sacrifice, but also the water and the stones of the altar. When the people saw this miracle, they glorified the true God and believed in Him again.
For his ardent zeal for the Glory of God, the prophet Elijah was taken to heaven alive in a chariot of fire. The prophet Elisha witnessed this miraculous ascent. Then, in the Transfiguration of the Lord, he appeared together with the prophet Moses and appeared before Jesus Christ, conversing with Him on Mount Tabor. According to the tradition of the Holy Church, the prophet Elijah will be the Forerunner of the Terrible Second Coming of Christ to earth and will die physically during the sermon.
They pray to the Holy Prophet Elijah for the protection of Christians of recent times from the seduction of the Antichrist, for intercession in persecution, in times of famine and widespread diseases, in poverty and other everyday difficulties.
