Serbian Patriarch Porfirije has called on Christians to preserve the memory of the heroes of the past as a foundation for peace, reconciliation, and spiritual renewal rather than a source of new divisions.

The Patriarch made the remarks during a commemorative gathering in Nikšić marking the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Vučji Do, one of the most significant military victories in Montenegro's history.

"Christian memory is illuminated by love," Patriarch Porfirije said. "It transforms the sacrifice of our ancestors into gratitude, and their heroism into a call for us to become better people—people of peace."

Quoting Christ's words from the Gospel of Matthew, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God," the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church stressed that remembrance of the past should lead to the healing of historical wounds rather than the perpetuation of hostility.

According to the Patriarch, Christians are called not only to love their neighbors but also their enemies, and genuine love for one's own nation must never become hatred toward others.

Patriarch Porfirije also spoke about the spiritual meaning of freedom, arguing that true liberty extends beyond political independence. He said freedom begins with liberation from sin, pride, hatred, and selfishness, adding that the historic Serbian and Montenegrin motto, "For the Honorable Cross and Golden Freedom," should be understood primarily through the light of the Gospel.

"The Cross is the symbol of Christ's sacrificial love," he said, emphasizing that authentic freedom cannot exist without responsibility, truth, and goodness.

The commemorative events are taking place in Nikšić and at Vučji Do, where Patriarch Porfirije is making a primatial visit. The following day, he is scheduled to celebrate the Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Holy Hieromartyr Athenogenes, built near the site of the historic battle.

The Battle of Vučji Do was fought on July 28, 1876, during the Montenegrin–Ottoman War. Forces led by Prince Nikola I Petrović inflicted a decisive defeat on a much larger Ottoman army. The victory strengthened Montenegro's international standing, became one of the defining events of the Great Eastern Crisis, and contributed to the principality's eventual international recognition at the Congress of Berlin in 1878.

In Serbian historical memory, the Battle of Vučji Do remains a symbol of unity, self-sacrifice, and the struggle for freedom. For the Serbian Orthodox Church, the anniversary also carries profound spiritual significance. The remembrance of those who died defending their homeland is linked to Christ's words in the Gospel of John: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."

For that reason, this year's anniversary observances place prayer and memorial services for the fallen at the center of the commemorations alongside official state ceremonies.
