Vakhtang Kipshidze, Deputy Chairman of the Synodal Department for Church—Society Relations and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate, believes that the recognition of the "international LGBT social movement" as an extremist organization in Russia is "a form of moral self-defense of society." According to him, the activities of the LGBT community are directed against the Christian idea of marriage and the religious concept itself.
"Recognition of the LGBT movement as extremist is a form of moral self-defense of society. According to the testimony of many Western Christians who adhere to traditional beliefs regarding marriage and family, the activities of LGBT movements are aimed at displacing the Christian idea of marriage and family from both the public and the legal space," Vakhtang Kipshidze commented on the court's decision (quoted by RIA Novosti).
The Ministry of Justice appealed to the Supreme Court on November 17 with a claim for recognition of the "international LGBT social movement" as extremist.
On November 30, the Supreme Court of Russia recognized the "international LGBT social movement" as extremist. The meeting was held behind closed doors. There was no defendant in the case — only representatives of the Ministry of Justice were present in the hall. The case was marked "secret".
