Sihăstria Monastery, Neamț County, Romania — August 2025 — In a deeply moving and historic ceremony, the Romanian Orthodox Church has officially canonized two of its most beloved 20th-century elders, Elder Paisie (Olaru) (1897–1990) and Elder Cleopa (Ilie) (1912–1998). The proclamation took place at Sihăstria Monastery, where both saints once lived and ministered, drawing thousands of faithful from across Romania and beyond.
The festive Divine Liturgy, which included the formal rite of canonization, was concelebrated by 24 hierarchs from various dioceses. The atmosphere was one of profound reverence as the Tome of Canonization, approved by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church in July 2024, was read aloud to the gathered faithful. The saints' feast day has been set for December 2.
In his sermon, Metropolitan Andrei of Cluj described Elder Paisie as one who “healed wounds of the soul through the power of the Holy Spirit,” while Elder Cleopa was hailed as a “remarkable spiritual teacher who illuminated souls with his words.”
Romanian Patriarch Daniel, in a special message for the occasion, called the newly canonized elders “two pillars of light between the mountains and the heavens,” highlighting their enduring impact on Romanian monasticism and spiritual life.
Both Paisie and Cleopa are considered icons of 20th-century Romanian eldership, much like the revered elders of Russia’s Optina Monastery. Their canonization is part of the 2025 Jubilee Year, marking the 100th anniversary of the Romanian Patriarchate and honoring the spiritual fathers and confessors of the 20th century.
Elder Paisie (Olaru) was a hesychast monk and spiritual guide known for his gentle and merciful spirit. He lived in a simple cell at Sihăstria Monastery, where he received countless pilgrims, offering them comfort and strengthening their faith through prayer and love.
Elder Cleopa (Ilie) served as abbot of the same monastery and became one of the most influential Romanian spiritual voices of his time. Known for his vivid sermons and deep knowledge of patristic teachings, his writings and teachings remain widely read throughout Romania today.
