The Church of the Savior of the Uncreated Image above the Holy Gates with a bell tower is one of the final buildings of the monastery architectural ensemble of the Borisoglebsky monastery.
The church replaced the stone gatehouse church in honor of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross with side chapels in honor of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, built in 1684. Presumably, the gate Church of the Savior was built according to the project of N.A. Lvov (there is no documentary evidence of this, experts find in it similarities with a similar structure built according to his project in the village of Murino near St. Petersburg), but after his death.
The construction was carried out from 1804 to 1811 under the supervision of the city architect F. Torzhok. Ananyina.
The architectural appearance of the church is a combination of classicism and the multilayered character of Russian wooden architecture.
With its slimness and beauty, this multi-tiered temple, the spire of which is visible from almost all the outskirts of the city of Torzhok, gives a majestic appearance to the entire monastery.
The building is multifunctional. The lower tier is the former Holy Gate, once the main entrance and entrance to the monastery. Above them is a temple room, then a tier with a belfry, a tier with a clock, and finally a decorative rotunda — an observation deck. The gate Church became the first temple to be recreated during the large-scale restoration of the monastery complex.
In April 2024, the Spasskaya Gate Church opened its gates to the monastery for the first time since the beginning of the 20th century. During the celebration of Holy Easter, the "Holy Gates under the Spasskaya Gate Church and Bell Tower" opened in the Borisoglebsky Monastery in Torzhok. For the first time in many years, the entrance to the monastery began to pass through the Holy Gates under the gatehouse church of the monastery.
In January 2025, all restoration work and wall painting in the altar of the Savior Gate Church were completed. Due to this event, regular worship services were resumed in the church. The work was carried out in connection with the need for major repairs of the Vvedenskaya monastery Church, where the main services had previously been held. The restoration of the Spasskaya Gate Church allowed not only to preserve the historical appearance of the architectural monument, but also to create convenient conditions for church services.
On February 8, Metropolitan Ambrose of Tver and Kashinsky celebrated the Great Consecration of the restored Gate Church of the Savior and the Divine Liturgy on the consecrated altar.
Now believers can visit the renovated church and participate in regular worship services, which will take place here until the completion of renovation work in the Church of Vvedenskaya.
