On February 23, 2025, a solemn ceremony was held in London to consecrate the new Bulgarian Orthodox church, "St. John of Rila." The consecration was led by His Holiness Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria, who specially traveled to the UK for the occasion, as reported by BTA.
The service was attended by numerous hierarchs of the Bulgarian Church, representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, as well as Orthodox churches in the UK. Notable guests included Westminster Mayor Robert Rigby, members of the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches, the Bulgarian community in the UK, and pilgrims from Bulgaria. Political and cultural figures, including Bulgarian diplomats, parliamentarians, and representatives from the Bulgarian Cultural Institute, also participated.
The service featured church hymns sung in both Bulgarian and English. The gospel reading during the service was from Matthew 25:31-46, reminding the congregation of the importance of mercy and good deeds. The laity, along with the clergy, recited the Nicene Creed, emphasizing unity in Christ.
In his sermon, Patriarch Daniel highlighted that the consecration of the new church was a joyous occasion not only for the Bulgarian community in the UK but also for the entire Orthodox Church. He emphasized that a church is more than just a building; it is a spiritual center meant to unite the faithful. "The Divine Liturgy celebrated here is our calling to be united in Christ. May this church become a welcoming center for all Bulgarians in the UK, a place of prayer, fellowship, and spiritual growth," he said.
According to the Patriarch, the church's construction was made possible through the combined efforts of Metropolitan Antony, parish priest Father Dobromir Dimitrov, Bulgarian diplomats, and numerous donors. "The names of all who contributed to the creation of this church will forever be written in heaven," he added.
After the consecration, Patriarch Daniel led the first Divine Liturgy at the new church. The service attracted a large congregation, many of whom were unable to enter due to the overwhelming number of attendees.
