Victoria Galkina

It was a quiet, sunlit morning. I had gotten up early so I could get ready without rushing. Standing before the mirror, I brushed my hair. It was behaving beautifully, catching the sunlight with a lovely shine. I liked what I saw.

Then a question came to me: If tomorrow my hair has lost its shine, if shadows appear beneath my eyes, will I have become less beautiful? Will I lose this happiness?

I remembered something a priest once told me after confession: “Beauty is a gift from God, not a personal achievement. Thank the Creator for it, but do not take pride in it. Everything passes: youth, freshness, the brightness of the eyes.”

He was right. How often I had let some small imperfection spoil my mood—a hairstyle that wouldn’t cooperate, a dress that didn’t fit quite right. I could spend the whole day feeling irritable and unhappy. Was it worth giving so much power to something so fleeting?

Last year, I went to a monastery to help with its daily work. There I met an elderly nun, her face lined with wrinkles, silver strands slipping from beneath her headscarf. She smiled at me with such warmth and light that I understood: this was real beauty. It wasn’t in a smooth face or fashionable clothes, but in the radiance that came from within. Her eyes held so much kindness and love that simply being near her made me feel peaceful and glad.

Now, when I catch myself admiring my reflection too much, I step to the window. I look at the trees and sky, take a deep breath, and say silently: “Thank you, Lord, for the appearance You have given me. Help me not to become absorbed in it, but to think about how I can serve You and those around me.”

I once read these words attributed to Saint John Chrysostom: “The beauty of the body without the beauty of the soul is like a flower without fragrance.” I pictured a perfect, deep-red rose—magnificent, but scentless. It is beautiful, certainly. But what is missing when there is no fragrance? Then I imagined a modest wildflower, carrying the sweet scent of honey and sunshine. It may be less striking, but it is alive, and it brings joy to the heart.

People can be like that, too. A person may look flawless, yet have nothing inside but emptiness or pride; such beauty cannot warm anyone. Another may have smile lines around the eyes and work-worn hands, yet shine with so much love that others are drawn to them like flowers to the sun.

Beauty is good. It is a gift from God. But it is not given so that we can become captivated by ourselves. Its deeper purpose is to let love—for God and for our neighbors—shine through us.
