Wildfires have been raging for several days in the Attica region of Greece, posing a significant threat to monasteries and residential areas. In the suburbs of Athens, evacuations have begun as the flames approach residential homes. Among the areas affected is the town of Nea Makri, located just 16 kilometers from the capital, where monks from the Annunciation Monastery and the Monastery of Saint Ephraim have been evacuated due to the fire's danger.

According to Orthodoxia News, the fire front is moving towards Mount Penteli, where the monasteries are situated at its base. The fire has already spread over an area exceeding 30 kilometers. The rapid spread of the wildfires is exacerbated by the dry and hot weather, combined with strong winds that constantly change direction, making firefighting efforts particularly challenging.

As reported by CNN, the Greek government has called on the European Union for assistance in combating the fire, requesting equipment and specialists. France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Spain, and Turkey have responded to the calls for help.

This summer, Greek authorities have already battled dozens of fires following the hottest June and July on record. The new wildfire has sparked fears that Greece could face a repeat of last summer’s devastating fires, which engulfed multiple regions and islands, including a national park known as the "lungs of Athens."
