Eikôn Publishing house has published a two-volume book with translations into French and Russian of the lives of the Lyon saints. The books make up the third and fourth volumes of the Saints bilingues series.
The two-volume book is intended to honor the memory of the saints who shone in the ancient French Lugdunum. Its publication is timed to celebrate the centenary of the Intercession Parish of the city of Lyon in France, founded in 1924.
The first volume contains a new translation of the Letter of the Churches of Vienne and Lyon, which was written by Christians who survived the persecution of 177. The book also includes a translation of a Latin sermon delivered on the memorial day of the Holy Martyr Blandina of Lyon by an unknown Gallic preacher in the 20s of the VI century, the website of the Diocese of Korsun reported on October 21, 2024.
The second volume includes translations of ancient texts related to the memory of the local prelates – bishops of Lyon: "The Martyrdom of Saints Irenaeus, Antiochus and Benignus", the ancient "Life of St. Justus", poems by bishop-poet Sidonius Apollinaris in honor of St. Patiens, as well as the ancient "Life of St. Nikita of Lyon". The books are accompanied by a map indicating the places mentioned in the books and a dictionary of rare terms. The translation from ancient Greek and Latin into French and Russian was made by Priest Sergei Kim, rector of the Intercession Parish of Lyon.
The parish was created by Russian emigrants who arrived in France after the 1917 revolution. At that time, up to 3 thousand emigrants from Russia settled in Lyon and its surroundings. An initiative group gathered around Archpriest Andrei Mishin, and on October 11, 1924, the Intercession Community of the city of Lyon was registered. The first services were held in the very center of the city, in a small room in which there were only a few icons brought from Russia. Soon the parish became the spiritual and cultural center of Russian emigrants in Lyon: Divine Liturgies were regularly served there, trebs were performed, and various events were held.
