A solemn opening ceremony of the monument to Tsar Boris Godunov took place in Vyazma on October 27, 2023. The monument is installed on the embankment along Lieutenant Schmidt Street. According to a number of researchers, Boris Fedorovich Godunov was born on Smolensk land, in the village of Fedorovsky near Vyazma. Boris Godunov left a bright mark in the national history. He played a special role in the appearance of the Smolensk fortress wall. Most historians consider Godunov to be the main initiator of its construction.
Archpriest Valery Kalinin, dean of the Vyazma district, addressed the participants of the celebration with a welcoming speech.
The author of the monument is a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and Russia, sculptor Alexander Semyonovich Parfenov. The artistic image of Boris Godunov is interesting. In one hand, the tsar holds a symbolic model of the temple: it was thanks to Boris Godunov that the Patriarchate was established in Russia in 1589, which made the Russian Orthodox Church completely independent of Constantinople and strengthened its international position. In the other hand of the king is a staff crowned with a double–headed eagle. Under Godunov, the external borders of the state were strengthened, the cities lost during the Livonian War were returned, and the expansion of influence in Siberia continued.
This monument to Tsar Boris Godunov is the first in Russia. Interestingly, the monument is made according to the sketch of the Vyazma schoolgirl Arina Ponomareva.
One of the initiators of the monument's installation, local philanthropist Denis Andreev, noted that the monument will become another attraction for tourists, an occasion to get to know the rich history of Russia more deeply. The participants of the event laid flowers at the monument.
