On the Day of the Russian Navy, July 28, 2024, employees of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Istanbul laid flowers at the memorial dedicated to the memory of the crew of the submarine "Walrus", which sank in 1917 while performing a combat mission.
Priest Georgy Sergeev, responsible for the care of Russian-speaking believers in the territory of the Turkish Republic, held a memorial service in memory of the fallen sailors, the telegram channel of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Istanbul reports.
The submarine "Walrus" was laid down at the shipyards in the city of Nikolaev in 1911, enlisted in the Black Sea Fleet in 1915. During the First World War, she took an active part in combat operations, won a number of victories over enemy ships.
The crew of 42 people under the command of Senior Lieutenant A.S. Gadon died during combat service in May 1917 in the Black Sea near the Bosphorus Strait.
The memorial was created on the territory of the summer residence of the Consulate General, which takes care of the burial.
