On July 29, at Cernica Monastery, the relics of Saint Dumitru Stăniloae were discovered, as reported by the information portal of the Romanian Orthodox Church. The ceremony was led by Bishop Timotei of Prahova.
The holy remains of Saint Dumitru were exhumed and placed in a new coffin, and will later be housed in a special reliquary. Although the canonization of Saint Dumitru will take place next year, the exhumation was conducted in advance to properly prepare the relics. The organizers are drawing on previous experiences of canonizing 20th-century saints. A silver reliquary for Saint Dumitru's remains is currently being crafted in the workshops of the Romanian Patriarchate.
Born in 1903, Saint Dumitru Stăniloae is one of the most respected Christian theologians of the second half of the 20th century. He translated the works of ascetics, monks, and Orthodox clerics from the 4th to the 15th centuries. He was highly esteemed both in Romania and abroad, earning the title of the "Patriarch of Romanian Theology." During the communist regime, he was imprisoned for his involvement in the Hesychast movement at the Antim Monastery.
In June 2024, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church decided to canonize sixteen saints who lived in the 20th century and suffered under communist rule. Icons for most of these saints have already been created and approved, and the composition of liturgical texts is underway. The celebrations for the canonization of these saints will take place in 2025, coinciding with the 140th anniversary of the Romanian Orthodox Church's autocephaly and the centenary of its recognition as a Patriarchate.
