On October 11, celebrations were held in Riga to honor St. John of Riga, as reported by the website of the Riga Diocese. The service in the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ was led by auxiliary bishops, Bishop John of Jelgava and Bishop John of Valmiera. Before the start of the All-Night Vigil, Bishop John of Jelgava led an akathist at the relics of St. John of Riga.

The bishops were joined by clergy from the Riga Diocese, including Archpriests Iakov Prisiazhnjuk, Oleg Pelevin, Vadim Demchenko, and Archimandrite Spiridon (Sergeev), among others. The choir of the Cathedral also performed during the service.

In the center of the church, a reliquary containing the blood of St. John, collected from the site of his martyrdom 90 years ago, was placed for veneration. This relic is kept in the cathedral and is presented for public veneration on the saint's feast days.

On October 12, the day marking the 90th anniversary of St. John’s martyrdom, a Divine Liturgy and a procession will take place at Riga's Cathedral, led by Metropolitan Alexander along with the bishops and clergy of the Latvian Orthodox Church.

Every Sunday, a moleben is held at the site of the saint's martyrdom, at 24 Pakalniešu Street, in both Church Slavonic and Latvian. This place has become a pilgrimage site where the faithful come to honor the memory of St. John of Riga.

St. John (Pommer) the Hieromartyr (1876–1934) spent the last 13 years of his life (1921–1934) serving as Archbishop of Riga and Latvia. Through his tireless efforts, 10 new churches were built and consecrated, the Riga Orthodox Theological Seminary was opened, and the number of Orthodox believers in Latvia grew by approximately 40,000 people.

On the night of October 12, 1934, Archbishop John was martyred, brutally tortured, and burned alive. In 2001, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church canonized him as a New Martyr of the Russian Church.
