In his Christmas message, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ expressed his gratitude to the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), who, despite persecution, remain steadfast in their Orthodox faith.
"I extend special thanks to all who, serving pastorally within Ukraine, at times risking their lives and health, continue to uphold canonical Orthodoxy, who fearlessly walk the path of confession, enduring reproach and suffering for Christ and for the Church. May the Lord assist such courageous defenders and champions of truth in their trials and count their sufferings as righteousness," the message states.
The Patriarch praised the courage of those continuing pastoral service in Ukraine, often at great personal risk. He highlighted the spiritual unity between Orthodox Christians in Russia and Ukraine, despite the difficult circumstances.
"We are one, bound by the unbreakable ties of love in Christ," the message reads. Patriarch Kirill expressed confidence that all hostile actions against the Church will be overcome, as they have been throughout history.
The situation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church remains complicated by pressure from Ukrainian authorities, who have seized church properties and accused priests of treason. Nevertheless, according to Ukrainian officials, approximately 5 to 6 million believers remain loyal to the UOC.
