On the island of Shikotan, which is part of the Small Ridge of the Kuril Islands, the construction of an Orthodox church has begun. On September 24, the rector of the temple, Hieromonk Seraphim (Dovletov), performed a prayer service for the beginning of every good deed. The stone, previously consecrated by Archbishop Nikanor, was laid in the foundation of the church by the participants of the prayer service and solemnly filled with concrete at the zero cycle level.
Immediately after the prayer service, the pouring of the foundation of the temple began.
The rite of foundation of the church in honor of St. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow in the village of Malokurilsky on the island of Shikotan, was previously performed by Archbishop Nikanor of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Kuril.
With the blessing of the archpastor, Hieromonk Seraphim thanked the heads of the Ostrovnoy fish processing plant for the initiative to erect the temple and in memory of the event presented them with icons of St. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow.
In addition to the temple, the complex will include a spiritual and educational center and a priest's house.
The construction is planned to be completed by the 100th anniversary of the blessed death of Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow, which will be widely celebrated by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2025.
