The Philotheos Monastery on Mount Athos has published three books in Russian dedicated to the great Orthodox ascetics, our recent contemporaries – the Venerable Elder Joseph of Athos, Elder Ephraim of Philotheos, Arizona (Moraitis) and Elder Makrina (Wassopoulou).
"For more than a thousand years of monastic history, Holy Mount Athos has revealed countless holy men who defined the path of the Orthodox Church in difficult times...", says the Preface of the book "Listen to my Words, my Good Son," which is a collection of small text excerpts from 81 epistles of Elder Joseph, Caveman and Hesychast (1897-1959). The works of the venerable elder are called the most significant phenomenon in the Orthodox writing of the twentieth century. This great legacy is available in full in Russian. The book, published by the Filofey monastery, will help every Christian who cares about his salvation to join the treasury of spiritual instructions of the elder, who was both an ascetic ascetic and a poet who expressed his unique monastic experience in artistic form.
The second edition, carried out with the blessing of Archimandrite Nikodim, rector of Philotheos Monastery, is a collection of letters from Elder Joseph's disciple, Archimandrite Ephraim (Moraitis; 1928-2019) in a new improved translation by the monastery's brethren and Archpriest Vasily Petrov (edited by Protodeacon, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Candidate of Theology V.V. Vasilik).
Elder Ephraim's "Fatherly Instructions" (as the collection is named) "are saturated with the spirit of Svyatogorsk hesychasm... simple in form, but deep and comprehensive in content, poetic and lyrical... imbued with humility and love for God and neighbor," the publishers write, addressing readers, expressing the hope that priceless grains of ascetic wisdom will become for them, enlightenment, comfort, and for some, the beginning of the path to God.
The book "Words of the Heart" is a collection of conversations of blessed Elder Makrina (Wassopoulou; 1921-1995), abbess of the monastery in honor of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "Hodegetria" in the city of Volos, founded with the blessing of St. Joseph the Hesychast. The elder nursed the sisters of the monastery until his death, handing them over to the spiritual guidance of Elder Ephraim of Philotheia. The words of the elder Makrina convey the living experience of setting up women's monasteries in the modern world. They provide answers to many of the innermost questions of monastic practice, and at the same time, due to the simplicity and accessibility of their presentation, they will be useful to laypeople who wish to strive in the Jesus prayer and succeed in their inner life on the path to Christ. The conversations were also translated by the brethren of the Filofey Monastery with the participation of Ph.D. Elena Ogorodnik.
All books are recommended for publication and distribution by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
