His Eminence Metropolitan Tikhon, Chairman of the Russian Orthodox Church Council on Culture, held a consultation with Mr. Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, on a variety of issues related to religious tourism in Russia.

In particular, attention has been given to facilitating pilgrimages and religiously oriented tourism in the Crimean Peninsula. It has been decided to develop a tourist program, "Christian Crimea", which should attract much interest in Russia and abroad.

" The national cultural preserve, centered around the modern-day city of Sebastopol, southwest of the Crimean Peninsula, is the most popular area for tourism," said Mr. Chernyshenko. "Over a million visitors come here annually. Further development is also underway here: a museum of classic antiquity and the Eastern Roman Empire will be opened here, together with museums of Christianity and the history of Crimea. An Educational Center for Humanities is also in the plans for this project.
