The Holy Martyr Mamant was born in Paphlagonia into the family of noble and pious Christians Theodotus and Rufina. For openly professing his faith, his parents were imprisoned in Caesarea of Cappadocia. Theodotus died in prison, and Rufina died soon after, having given birth to her son prematurely and entrusting him to God's care.
The Lord heard her prayer: the rich Christian Ammia honorably buried the bodies of the martyrs, and took the baby into her home and raised him as her own son. She gave him a good education and strengthened him in the Christian faith. From a young age, Mamant was distinguished by his prudence and firmness of spirit. By his word and personal example, he converted his peers to Christ.
For preaching Christianity, the young man was captured and brought before the ruler Democritus, and then before the emperor Aurelian. Neither promises nor threats forced Mamant to renounce Christ. After severe tortures, he was sentenced to death, but an Angel of the Lord saved the saint and ordered him to retire to the desert near Caesarea.
Mamant built a small church on the mountain and spent his days in fasting and prayer. Wild animals came to his dwelling and peacefully listened to the Gospel reading. The saint fed on the milk of goats and fallow deer, and distributed the cheese made from it to the poor.
The fame of the ascetic spread throughout Caesarea. Mamant received the soldiers sent after him in his hut, treated them to milk, and then told them his name himself and voluntarily followed the court. The vicar Alexander subjected the saint to new torments, but the Lord strengthened him with words: "Be strong and brave, Mamant."
When the martyr was thrown to the beasts, they did not touch him. Then the pagan priest mortally wounded the saint with a trident. Mamant went outside the city and gave his soul to God in a small cave. This happened around the year 275. The Christians buried him at the place of his death.
The veneration of the martyr Mamant spread rapidly among the faithful. Through his prayers, people received help in their sorrows, healing from diseases, and guidance in faith. St. Basil the Great called on Christians to preserve the memory of the martyr and to thank him for his gracious intercession.
