The Church of Greece has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating wildfires sweeping across multiple regions of the country and pledged to provide spiritual, humanitarian, and material assistance to those affected.

The statement was issued by Metropolitan Bartholomew of Polyani and Kilkis, the official spokesperson for the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece.

"The Holy Synod expresses its profound grief over the destructive fires affecting various parts of our country and extends its support to all those impacted," the statement said.

The Church also offered its condolences to the families of three firefighters who lost their lives while battling the blazes. The Holy Synod said it is praying for the repose of the fallen firefighters and for strength and protection for all emergency personnel risking their lives to defend communities and Greece's natural heritage.

Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece has remained in close contact with the metropolitans of the dioceses affected by the disaster. With his blessing, the Church has pledged to provide comprehensive spiritual, humanitarian, and financial support to people who have lost their homes and property in the fires.

The Holy Synod also called on the faithful to pray for the swift containment of the wildfires, the safety of those fighting the flames, and the rapid recovery of the affected regions.

Meanwhile, firefighters continue to battle dozens of active wildfire fronts across Greece. The most critical situation remains in the region of Boeotia, where strong winds and rugged terrain have significantly complicated firefighting efforts. Major fires have also been reported in Attica, Achaea, Argolis, and on the island of Crete.

According to the Greek Fire Service, hundreds of firefighters, supported by dozens of fire engines, aircraft, civil protection units, police officers, and volunteers, have been deployed to combat the most dangerous blazes. More than 250 people have been evacuated from coastal areas threatened by the advancing fires, while residents of several communities have received repeated emergency alerts urging them to leave high-risk zones.

Greek authorities have warned that the combination of extreme heat and strong winds will keep the risk of new wildfires exceptionally high in the coming days. Civil protection services across the country remain on heightened alert.
