Living in a communal apartment has its challenges, and our neighbor's drinking habits were a constant source of distress. The stench, the loud arguments, and his frequent falls in the corridor plagued our daily lives. Little did we know that one night, our neighbor's harmful habit would nearly cost us our lives.
With our parents away, my sister and I were left alone. We stayed up late, watching movies, chatting, and eventually, we went to bed, quickly drifting into sleep. Suddenly, through the haze of slumber, I heard my sister's outraged cry: "Enough is enough!" Startled, I woke up. I saw her jump out of bed and rush into our neighbor's room. I followed her.
Both of us burst into his room to find it filled with smoke. His armchair was on fire! It turned out my sister had dreamt that our neighbor was sitting in his chair, smoking. The cigarette fell, igniting a fire. Astonishingly, this was exactly what was happening in reality.
I believe that a higher power had revealed these events to her.
We managed to put out the fire and bring our neighbor back to his senses. That night, I went to sleep with a profound sense that we had narrowly escaped death. If my sister hadn't intuitively known what was happening through her dream, we would have suffocated in our sleep.
Coincidence? Mysticism? No. We saved our neighbor from death, and the divine intervened to save us. It granted time for repentance and a chance to rectify our lives. Precious minutes, days, and years. Do we value them? Unfortunately, in the hustle of life, we often forget that eternity awaits us, and human days on Earth are numbered.
Reflecting on this story, feeling the breath of death once more, my mind clears. Superfluous worries fade away. The primary desire becomes reconciliation with God through confession, communion with Him through the sacred Eucharist, and seeking forgiveness from our neighbors. Regrettably, our neighbor did not change his ways after this incident. Still, we keep him in our prayers. Lord, save us all; we thank you for always being close! So near!
