In the Lord's Prayer, there are these lines: "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors." We recite it every day. But can we honestly say, "Yes, today I forgave everyone wholeheartedly, and my heart is at peace?" Not always. Sometimes, someone hurts me so deeply that a wound remains bleeding in my heart.
Antony of Surazh taught, "Be honest before God! Do not pretend!" So, I say to God, "This person hurt me. Help! Help change my attitude towards them! Forgive them genuinely, not just in words." It doesn't happen immediately, but over time, a real miracle occurs: God, through prayer, changes my heart. He heals the wound. Only then does the resentment disappear forever.
Once, due to a trivial matter, as often happens, a close friend and I had a falling out and grew cold toward each other. We almost stopped communicating. At first, I decided, "Well, one less friend." But my soul longed for her. And I began to pray for our relationship to be restored.
And suddenly, she called me!
"Yana, today I remembered you, and my heart felt so warm. I missed you so much! Let's meet!" said my friend.
I understood that my prayer was heard. God touched her heart. This astonishes me!
We can't always change our attitude toward someone, especially if they have hurt us deeply. But God can change it! Without force. Without breaking points. Different emotions simply appear in the soul. From negative to positive. The Lord can do this if we strive for love with others and sincerely ask Him to give us that love.
And the most important realization for me is not to pretend before God. It's better to honestly admit that I haven't forgiven, I don't love, I'm angry! But I don't want it to be that way. I ask for help to change. Then the long-awaited transformation happens.
