The building of the former Church of the Epiphany and the current House of Culture will be restored in Ostrogozhsk, Voronezh Region. Experts have prepared a project for the preservation of this cultural heritage site, the Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Voronezh Region reported on Friday, October 17.
Comprehensive repairs are planned, including the restoration of facades and interiors, strengthening of the foundation, replacement of engineering systems, windows and doors, and other work.
The building was built at the end of the 18th century, and a distinctive feature of this temple is a unique monumental iconostasis of a rare screen-like design. Its height reached 15 meters above the main altar, creating a unique artistic effect. In the middle of the 19th century, the building was partially rebuilt, a large refectory and a three-tiered bell tower with a giant bell were added.
During the war, the building was severely damaged, and in the 50s of the 20th century it was decided to radically rebuild it and turn it into a Cultural Center. The bell tower and side chapels were dismantled, and an assembly hall was added to the historic refectory. The facades and interiors were plastered, supplemented with stucco, and all necessary communications were carried out. Despite all the changes, the former church managed to preserve the foundation – the lower tiers of the refectory and the temple part.
