The Serbian Orthodox Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos celebrated a significant milestone this week: the 35th anniversary of its return to the ancient cenobitic way of monastic life — a communal form of monasticism rooted in shared prayer, labor, and resources. The celebration coincided with the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, one of the most revered feast days in the Orthodox Christian calendar.

Founded in 1198 by Saint Sava and his father, Saint Simeon (formerly the Serbian ruler Stefan Nemanja), Hilandar is one of the twenty sovereign monasteries on the Holy Mountain of Athos, an autonomous monastic republic under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. It remains a cornerstone of Serbian spiritual and cultural identity.

The anniversary festivities drew monks from across Mount Athos, Serbia, Montenegro, and representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Divine Liturgy was presided over by Bishop Tikhon of Moravica, vicar to the Serbian Patriarch Porfirije. Following the service, a newly constructed altar featuring an icon of the Theotokos — whom the monks venerate as their Heavenly Abbess — was consecrated in the monastery’s main church.

The return to the cenobitic rule in 1990 marked a turning point in Hilandar’s modern history. For nearly two centuries prior, the monastery had operated under the idiorrhythmic system, in which monks lived more independently — each managing their own resources and daily routines. Though legalistically formalized in the 18th century, this model had taken root after the fall of the Serbian Despotate in 1459 and the subsequent decline of monastic patronage during the Ottoman era.

Under idiorrhythmia, Hilandar suffered from spiritual fragmentation and diminished communal life. The 1990 restoration of the ancient cenobitic rule — originally established by Saint Sava — brought renewed unity, discipline, and spiritual vitality to the monastic brotherhood.

In his remarks, Bishop Tikhon praised the monastery’s perseverance through centuries of hardship and its renewed witness of authentic Orthodox monasticism:
"Hilandar stands today as a living testament to the power of spiritual renewal rooted in tradition — a place where prayer and fraternity once again shape the life of the community, just as our holy founders intended."

The celebration also served as a reminder of Hilandar's enduring historical importance. Throughout its golden age from the 13th to 15th centuries, the monastery was a spiritual and cultural beacon for the Serbian people. Despite centuries of Ottoman rule and the erosion of royal support, Hilandar remained a guardian of Orthodox faith and tradition.

Today, as it continues to flourish under the cenobitic rule, Hilandar is once again seen as a spiritual stronghold not only for Serbs, but for the broader Orthodox world. The monastery’s leadership expressed gratitude for the international support it has received in restoring its structures and monastic life — and affirmed its commitment to preserving the legacy entrusted to it over eight centuries ago.
