The Romanian Orthodox Church celebrated the canonization of Saint Makarios the Protopsaltis on October 28, 2024, during a grand service at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest. The official declaration of canonization was announced following the liturgy held in honor of Saint Dimitrie the New, the patron saint of Bucharest. Thousands of pilgrims attended the ceremony, joined by a delegation from the Orthodox Church of Cyprus led by Archbishop George, who brought the relics of Saint Lazarus the Four-Days-Dead to Romania, according to Basilica.ro.

The festivities honoring Saint Dimitrie the New took place throughout the weekend in Bucharest, with the relics of Saints Dimitrie and Lazarus displayed at the Patriarchal Cathedral for veneration. On Sunday, the relics were carried through the streets of Bucharest in a solemn procession, concluding with a prayer service led by Romanian Patriarch Daniel and Cypriot Archbishop George in front of the cathedral.

At the conclusion of the liturgy, a synodal decree officially canonizing Saint Makarios the Protopsaltis was read aloud on the Patriarchate Hill. Following the decree’s reading, a hymn dedicated to Saint Makarios was sung, and an icon of the new saint was unveiled. The decision to canonize him was made by the Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2023, in a year dedicated to hymnographers and church cantors. Saint Makarios’ feast day will be celebrated on August 31.

Saint Makarios the Protopsaltis (1763–1836) is revered as a pivotal figure in Romanian church music. A hieromonk by the early 19th century, he received Metropolitan Dionysius Lupu's blessing to translate Greek hymns into Romanian, significantly aiding the spread of church music in the native language. In the 1820s, he published the first Romanian-language hymnals, including Theoretikon, Anastasimatarul, and Irmologionul. Later, he founded a church music school in Iași, followed by schools in the Căldărușani and Șigănești monasteries, inspiring a new generation of hymnographers.
