The actions of the Ukrainian authorities concerning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) have been listed as human rights violations in the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The report highlights the closure of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, several cases of church seizures resulting in harm to individuals, and the judicial persecution of UOC hierarchs.
During the investigated period, from February 1 to July 31, 2023, the report documented 10 cases of physical violence and 6 cases of threats based on religious grounds. The tension was particularly high in March and April 2023.
The UN report also addresses the seizure of the UOC cathedral in Ivano-Frankivsk, where members of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) used tear gas against UOC believers and clergy. It was noted that law enforcement officers, positioned five meters from the scene, did not prevent the violence.
According to the UN, as a result of the violence against UOC believers, several individuals were injured, at least one clergy member was hospitalized, and a woman suffered a miscarriage after tear gas was deployed.
Additionally, the UN report on human rights violations included the annulment of agreements with the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, raids by law enforcement in churches and monasteries, suspicions, and precautionary measures against UOC clergy and hierarchs.
