On January 16, a Christmas choir was held in the Nizhny Novgorod Cathedral in honor of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky. The event was led by Metropolitan George of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas.
With the blessing of the head of the Nizhny Novgorod Archdiocese, the choir cathedral was organized by the Department of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Department of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod administration.
The guests of the celebration were Gleb Nikitin, Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Sergey Gorin, Chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod Civic Chamber, heads of departments and deans of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese.
The Christmas Choral Cathedral was held for the 19th time. 417 people from 11 choral groups took part in it.
The special guests of the event were the State Choral Chapel of the Republic of Abkhazia, the Vladimir Municipal Chamber Choir "Raspev", the chamber choir "Martaccord" of Moscow, the choral school of boys and boys "Epiphany" at the Epiphany Cathedral of Moscow, the choral ensemble "Inter Notas" of Ryazan.
Nizhny Novgorod land was represented by the Nizhny Novgorod municipal chamber Choir, the consolidated choir of Nizhny Novgorod theological schools, the choir of the Nizhny Novgorod Music College named after M. A. Balakirev, the youth choir of the Nizhny Novgorod Choral College named after L. K. Sivukhin, the youth choir "Contrast" of the Nizhny Novgorod Provincial College, the exemplary senior choir "Tuning Fork" of the V. P. Chkalov Palace of Children's Creativity.
The concert program was traditionally based on the glorification of the Lord God in liturgical spiritual hymns, hymns and cantos.
The participants of the choral cathedral performed spiritual Christmas carols to the music of composers Pavel Chesnokov, Georgy Sviridov and others. The creative teams performed spiritual hymns, troparia, kontakion, irmos, carols, cantos and prayer books.
Volunteers from the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese helped organize the event.
The governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese congratulated those present on Christmas and thanked the organizers and participants of the choral cathedral: "It has become a good tradition on Christmas days to gather under the shadow of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to celebrate the birth of Christ together and listen to a wonderful performance. Today we all declare together: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, and good will toward mankind" (Luke 2:14). I thank the organizers of the choral cathedral and warmly welcome our guests — creative teams from Sukhum, the Republic of Abkhazia, Moscow, Ryazan, Vladimir. It is a great spiritual joy for us that you have come to share the joy of the holiday. This is the 19th time our choral council has been held, and I hope that we will also meet at the 20th anniversary Council, and the number of participants will only increase. It is very gratifying that many children and young people are taking part in the cathedral today, who are getting acquainted with the church singing culture. Church hymns are theology in sounds. Through music, we contemplate the glory of God, thanks to the people who had the gift to create it. They have left us a great creative legacy. I wish you all God's help and creative success, and may the light of the Star of Bethlehem sanctify your hearts."
The participants of the choral council were awarded with episcopal diplomas and letters of thanks.
Metropolitan George especially thanked conductor Ivan Stolnikov and presented him with a festive Christmas ball. All participants of the Christmas Choir Cathedral received chocolates.
