The Russian Orthodox Church has officially registered a new parish in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Yangon, marking a historic step in the Church's presence in Southeast Asia.
The ceremonial signing of the parish charter took place in the capital of Myanmar and was attended by senior Russian and Myanmar officials. Representing the Russian side were Metropolitan Sergius of Singapore and Southeast Asia, Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia; Russian Ambassador to Myanmar H.E. Iskander Azizov; Bishop Pitirim of Jakarta, Vicar of the Singapore Diocese; and other diplomats from the Russian Embassy.
Myanmar was represented by Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs and Culture U Aye Tun, along with other senior officials from relevant government departments.
Speakers at the ceremony emphasized the significance of this event for strengthening spiritual, cultural, and humanitarian ties between Russia and Myanmar. They also highlighted the registration as a foundation for constructive dialogue and expanded cooperation in religious and cultural spheres.
This development follows the February 18, 2025, decision by Myanmar’s government in Naypyidaw to officially permit the Russian Orthodox Church to conduct religious activities within the country. At that time, Metropolitan Sergius noted that the planned Orthodox church in Yangon would not only be an architectural landmark but also a symbol of friendship between the Russian and Myanmar peoples.
