The 76th graduation of officers, midshipmen and ensigns took place in Sevastopol, at the Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov Black Sea Higher Naval Order and Red Star College.

On June 21, according to a long-standing tradition, the graduates' personal weapons, cutlasses, were consecrated in the Prince Vladimir Cathedral, the tomb of the admirals. The rite of consecration was performed by the dean of the Central Church District, Archpriest Sergiy Khalyuta. After the prescribed prayers, Father Sergius sprinkled holy water three times on the dirks.

At the end of the service, Father Sergius addressed the young officers with a pastoral word, blessing them for military service and wishing that the powerful weapons that they would hold in their hands at the duty stations would serve to protect the Motherland and the people of Russia.

The calling of the future Primate to episcopal ministry was formally established by a resolution of the Holy Synod in early March 1976; on the eve of the consecration, the rite of nomination took place, and on March 14—on the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy—at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Archimandrite Kirill (Gundyaev), rector of the Leningrad theological schools, was consecrated Bishop of Vyborg.

Exactly 50 years ago, on March 13, 1976, at the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian at the Leningrad Theological Academy, the rite of nomination took place; and on the following day, March 14, the First Sunday of Great Lent, the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, during the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Leningrad, the episcopal consecration of Archimandrite Kirill — the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ — was performed. The service was presided over by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), whom His Holiness Patriarch Kirill calls his spiritual mentor and teacher.
