A new Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God has been consecrated in Boyan, Alberta, three years after the historic Romanian Orthodox church there was destroyed by fire. The replacement building was constructed to preserve the architectural appearance of the original church.

The celebrations took place from August 14 to 16. On the Feast of the Dormition, the new church was consecrated by Bishop Ioan Casian of Canada, Metropolitan Joseph of Western and Southern Europe, and Metropolitan Nicholas of the Americas. A Divine Liturgy followed the consecration.

The former church burned down on June 6, 2023. No one was injured, but the fire completely destroyed the building, which had served as the center of the Romanian Orthodox community for more than a century.

Boyan is considered one of the principal historic centers of the Romanian diaspora in Canada. The first settlers from Bukovina arrived in the area in the late 19th century and established a settlement named after their native Boyan. A Romanian Orthodox parish was founded in 1902, and the Church of the Dormition was consecrated in 1905.

Even after many residents moved away from Boyan, the church remained a gathering place for several generations of Romanian Canadians. Descendants of the first settlers are buried in the church cemetery.

Following the fire, the community decided to rebuild the church on its historic site. Bishop Ioan Casian said the new building represented the revival of the community and demonstrated how faith and collective effort can help people overcome a major hardship.

The celebrations were attended by numerous faithful and clergy from the Romanian Orthodox Church in Canada, as well as representatives of the Romanian consulate. Parish rector Father Gheorghe Petrovan was honored for his role in rebuilding the church.
