On the day of the commemoration of St. Sergius of Radonezh, the Wonderworker of All Russia, on October 8, the senior priest for spiritual care at Balaklava Hospital, cleric of St. Luke of the Crimea, Archpriest Pavel Bondar, visited the soldiers who are being treated at this hospital. The priest performed a prayer service for health, at the end of which he warmly congratulated St. Sergius of Radonezh, who was especially revered in our Fatherland, on the holiday.

In the conversations, the priest told the soldiers about the spiritual exploits of the saint, his care and prayers for the Russian land. Father Pavel wished everyone a speedy recovery. Many soldiers confessed and took communion of the saving and life-giving Holy Mysteries of Christ.

The calling of the future Primate to episcopal ministry was formally established by a resolution of the Holy Synod in early March 1976; on the eve of the consecration, the rite of nomination took place, and on March 14—on the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy—at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Archimandrite Kirill (Gundyaev), rector of the Leningrad theological schools, was consecrated Bishop of Vyborg.

Exactly 50 years ago, on March 13, 1976, at the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian at the Leningrad Theological Academy, the rite of nomination took place; and on the following day, March 14, the First Sunday of Great Lent, the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, during the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Leningrad, the episcopal consecration of Archimandrite Kirill — the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ — was performed. The service was presided over by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), whom His Holiness Patriarch Kirill calls his spiritual mentor and teacher.
