Church-state crisis erupts in Armenia

The Mother See of Echmiadzin reacted to the statement of Arsen Torosyan, a member of parliament from the ruling Civil Contract party, about the Armenian Apostolic Church. Earlier, Torosyan, in particular, wrote on a social network that the Armenian people, "in addition to having to destroy more than 100-year-old stereotypes and myths <...>, also actually have to completely and completely destroy the 1,700-year-old myth." 
According to him, "the church reveals its real goals: sacrificing the statehood of Armenia for the sake of its external and internal group interests." 
The head of the Office of the Mother See of Echmiadzin, Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan, commented on this statement to Graparak. "I don't think it's necessary to comment on the absurdity. I will only add that in order to appear intelligent, it is necessary not to call obvious facts mythology, but first of all to use the free services of the brain," the publication quotes the archbishop. 
On May 4, the Tavush for the Motherland movement began a march from the village of Kirants to Yerevan demanding an end to unilateral territorial concessions to Azerbaijan. On May 9, a rally of the movement was held on Republic Square in Yerevan. The head of the Tavush diocese of the Armenian Orthodox Church announced the beginning of peaceful civil disobedience actions on May 10 after one hour, which he gave Pashinyan to resign.
