In a solemn ceremony held in Moscow, a foundation stone of a large wooden cathedral in honor of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was laid.

The cathedral will be the largest wooden church in Central Russia, designed for 750 parishioners, with projected height of more than 40 meters.

Over the past five years, parishioners of a small wooden church dedicated to St. Sabbas the Sanctified, have been building a whole city of wood, with their own money. They started with a small church, a separate building for the baptistery, a Sunday school, a refectory, and a church shop. Now, the main cathedral is going to be built of 300-year-old Siberian cedar.

Near the construction site of the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul, there is a 7-meter carved cross made of larch, modeled on the Solovky holy places that have been erected.

Solovki (the Solovetsky Archipelago) is one of the most revered holy places in Russia. It is often described as the Northern Athos. The average annual temperature in Solovki is + 1.1 ° С.

The first monks got to Solovki in the early 15th century. The Solovetsky Savior Transfiguration monastery, founded in 1436, was one of the most well-known and revered monasteries in Russia.
