On October 29, 2024, the 33rd joint meeting of the Supervisory, Public and Board of Trustees for the publication of the Orthodox Encyclopedia was held at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.
The Chairman of the Supervisory Board is His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
The previous 32nd meeting was held on March 28, 2023. At the moment, 73 of the 75 volumes of the Orthodox Encyclopedia have been released. The topic of today's 33rd meeting is the completion of the publication of the Orthodox Encyclopedia and the algorithm of actions to ensure it.
A meeting of the Councils for the publication of the Orthodox Encyclopedia was organized in the Patriarchal Hall of the Refectory Chambers of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. 68-73 alphabetical volumes of the Orthodox Encyclopedia were presented on the stand next to the presidium table.
With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the meeting was headed by the Patriarchal Vicar of the Moscow Metropolitanate, Metropolitan Pavel of Krutitsky and Kolomna.
Metropolitan Kliment of Kaluga and Borovsk, Chairman of the Publishing Council, also took part in the meeting from among the representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Opening the meeting, Metropolitan Pavel, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, read out the address of His Holiness:
"Dear members of the Councils and participants of the meeting!
I am cordially glad to welcome you all. Today we are not having an ordinary meeting: for the first time in decades, we are close to summarizing the results of many years of work on the creation of the Orthodox Encyclopedia.
Today we were presented with the 73rd volume out of print, which ends with an article about St. Christopher of Solvychegod. Before the completion of the Orthodox Encyclopedia, it remains to prepare and release two volumes next year: the 74th and the 75th.
Today we will discuss issues related to the new tasks facing the Orthodox Encyclopedia Church Research Center, which, undoubtedly, should continue its activities. It is also necessary to discuss the possibility and necessity of completing the "Orthodox Encyclopedia" of libraries and universities in the Republic of Crimea, the Luhansk People's Republic, the Donetsk People's Republic, in the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, as well as in the Chechen Republic, that is, in those regions where the "Orthodox Encyclopedia" was not previously supplied for various reasons.
...The work on the publication of the "Orthodox Encyclopedia" has been going on for more than 25 years. The first review volume, as we remember, was dedicated to the Russian Orthodox Church and was published in 2000, after which the publication of alphabetical volumes began.
The 75 volumes of the Orthodox Encyclopedia are by far the most voluminous, detailed and scientifically verified publication in the world, covering all aspects of Christian life: the history of the Church and Christian civilization, Christian culture and theology, science and art. At the same time, the publication was created in an unprecedented short time. For a quarter of a century, the Orthodox Encyclopedia has developed a remarkable scientific, editorial and author's team. Vast experience and knowledge have been acquired, and outstanding scientists are involved in the project.
Now this long-term work on alphabetical volumes is coming to an end, but the work of the Church Research Center does not end there. The tasks that the team faces can be divided into three areas.
The first direction is related to the updating and republishing of the volume "The Russian Orthodox Church". Significant changes have taken place in our Church over the past decades. In addition, when creating alphabetical articles, research was conducted that will help expand and clarify the data of the volume of the two thousandth year of issue. I believe that the republished volume should become an integral part of the entire publication. In the coming years, it is necessary to complete the creation of an electronic version of the entire "Orthodox Encyclopedia".
This area of activity also includes the completion of work on the publication of an encyclopedia dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh. This work was started, brought to about the middle, but postponed due to the heavy workload associated with accelerating the release of volumes, as well as in connection with the preparation and publication of a study on the reunification of the Kiev Metropolia with the Russian Orthodox Church. This edition, which contains hundreds of archival documents, was published in 2019.
The second no less important area of activity is the publication of books that would allow to overcome the disparity of alphabetical articles of the Orthodox Encyclopedia and thereby crown the multi-volume edition with a collection of academic essays on the history of Christianity and worship, Christian art and science. They will be closely interrelated with the articles of the encyclopedia, which will allow authors and editors to focus on what is not available to the encyclopedia as a genre: on the internal processes of formation and development, on the historical and cultural context of certain phenomena. Sergey Leonidovich Kravets will present this direction in more detail.
And, finally, the third direction is connected with the continuation and expansion of the research works that are carried out in the "Orthodox Encyclopedia". I am referring primarily to the work on the codification of monuments of Orthodox Church law, which has been underway for many years. This database contains descriptions of more than 10,000 documents, including case law, but covers mainly the Byzantine period in the history of Orthodoxy, as well as monuments of Russian history. It would be important to include in this database also the monuments of church law of other Orthodox Churches. I think that the Orthodox Encyclopedia will also continue, together with the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the description of archival documents related to the history of the Church of the Soviet period."
The Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, member of the Public Council P.O. Tolstoy made a report on the plans of the Public Council to support new projects of the Orthodox Encyclopedia Church Research Center.
Then the report of the head of the Orthodox Encyclopedia Center, S.L. Kravets, was heard.
Metropolitan Pavel further spoke about plans to supply the Orthodox Encyclopedia to new regions of the Russian Federation in 2026.
Representatives of ministries and departments made statements about the support of the Orthodox Encyclopedia.
In conclusion, Metropolitan Pavel of Krutitsky and Kolomna, on behalf of the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, thanked the members of the Supervisory, Public and Board of Trustees for their efforts and summed up the meeting.
