One of the world’s most iconic landmarks, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, is set to reopen on December 7, following a devastating fire and over five years of restoration work. On November 29, French President Emmanuel Macron visited the cathedral with journalists, reports BBC News.

Although exterior restoration continues, with scaffolding still visible on the roof, the interior is ready to welcome visitors. Highlights of the renewed interior include the restored altar, new lighting, ceilings, and reconstructed wooden roof structures. Plans for the plaza in front of the cathedral were also presented, featuring 160 trees and a fountain designed to cool the air.

On April 15, 2019, a massive fire at Notre-Dame destroyed the spire and wooden roof, severely damaging parts of the stone vault. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

President Macron had pledged to restore the cathedral within five years. Full restoration is expected to be completed by 2029–2030, with the total cost estimated at €850 million.
