On September 8, 2025, a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Jerusalem Patriarchate was held in Jerusalem, resulting in the decision to depose Archbishop Damianos of Sinai, Pharan, and Raitho. According to the Patriarchate, the decision was made in light of both the hierarch's request for resignation and the canonical violations he committed.
The Synod took into account the resolution of the Sinai Brotherhood from July 30, which called for the archbishop's removal from his duties, as well as his letter expressing the intention to resign. Effective September 12, the date on which the archbishop announced his resignation, his title will officially change to "Former Archbishop of Sinai, Pharan, and Raitho."
Although Archbishop Damianos was invited to the meeting, he did not attend, as he was in Athens at the time. The Patriarchate emphasized that Patriarch Theophilos III showed leniency towards the archbishop's advanced age and aimed to "normalize the life of the Monastery of St. Catherine on Sinai" while preparing for the canonical election of a new head.
The Synod called upon the brotherhood of the monastery to begin the process of electing a new archbishop and expressed prayers for Damianos, wishing him "longevity and blessings from the Most Holy and Life-Giving Tomb of the Lord."
