The Russian Orthodox Church has been formally registered in Madagascar, marking a significant step in its presence on the island nation. The decision was approved by the Malagasy government, according to a statement cited by Russian media and published on the website of the Russian Embassy in Antananarivo.

On April 2, Prime Minister Christian Ntsay (Mamintiana Radzaonarimampianina) announced the move during a meeting with Russia’s chargé d'affaires, Alexey Buryak. The official recognition grants the Russian Orthodox Church legal status in Madagascar and paves the way for expanded parish activities and social outreach.

According to embassy representatives, the decision strengthens the Church’s ability to operate openly and develop humanitarian and community programs across the country.

Parishes under the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa have already been active in Madagascar. In February, clergy members provided large-scale humanitarian aid to victims of Tropical Cyclone “Gezani,” which struck the eastern coast. In areas around the city of Toamasina, food supplies, essential goods, and building materials were distributed, benefiting more than 1,000 families. Churches also held services and prayers for those affected by the disaster.

Orthodox communities are also present in the capital, Antananarivo, where a parish of around 40 members gathers for worship. Many attendees travel from different parts of the city. Services are held in a converted space, and major religious holidays such as Easter are adapted to local conditions, including being scheduled during daylight hours for safety and accessibility.

The growth of Orthodox Christianity in Madagascar has also included missionary efforts. In one parish in the southeastern part of the island, 60 local residents—10 adults and 50 children—were recently baptized, reflecting the Church’s ongoing expansion in the region.
