The Romanian Patriarchate has called for urgent assistance to people affected by severe snowstorms that have swept across Romania, leaving around 200,000 homes without electricity and disrupting transport and daily life in large parts of the country.

According to Romanian authorities, heavy snowfall and blizzards in recent days have created hazardous conditions for both motorists and pedestrians. In the capital, Bucharest, more than 40 centimeters of snow fell within a short period, causing interruptions to public transport and delays in railway services. Schools in several localities were closed as snowplows and emergency crews worked at full capacity to clear roads and respond to incidents.

In response to the crisis, the Romanian Patriarchate issued an appeal to clergy and faithful to mobilize practical support for those in need, particularly the elderly, low-income families, and individuals facing hardship due to the extreme weather. A statement published on the Patriarchate’s website emphasized the importance of assisting with snow removal and helping people cope with urgent household difficulties.

Parish priests were urged to activate parish councils and committees to organize the distribution of food packages and essential supplies. Believers were also encouraged to demonstrate solidarity and provide concrete help to neighbors struggling because of the severe conditions.

Earlier, Romanian authorities declared emergency situations in dozens of localities. Energy supply disruptions, blocked roads and railways, and significant snow drifts in mountainous regions have further complicated the work of emergency services and affected everyday life. Officials say the situation remains tense, and coordinated efforts by state institutions and civil society, including church communities, are crucial to overcoming the consequences of the severe winter weather.
