On January 9, 2025, a funeral service for the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, was held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon, the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, participated in the procession and liturgy alongside other religious leaders, according to the website of the Orthodox Church in America.

Jimmy Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. As the longest-lived president in U.S. history, Carter was known for his active foreign policy and humanitarian work, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

The memorial service was attended by current U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, as well as three former presidents—Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama—and President-elect Donald Trump. International dignitaries included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, according to TASS.

Earlier in the day, a motorcade carried Carter's body from the Capitol, where Americans had been able to pay their respects for two days. The route included ceremonial cannon salutes and a passage by the White House, honoring the late leader's legacy.

During the service, President Biden delivered a heartfelt eulogy, calling Carter a friend and an inspiration for his commitment to respect and justice. Members of Carter's family and colleagues also shared memories of his character and guiding principles. The ceremony concluded with a rendition of John Lennon’s "Imagine," one of Carter’s favorite songs.

Following the service, Carter's casket was transported to Andrews Air Force Base and flown to Plains, Georgia. He will be laid to rest next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in 2023.
