Russian Orthodox Church's Supreme Ecclesiastical Council held a regular meeting in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior on September 17, 2026. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia led the work of the meeting.
One of the central topics was the problem of the development of artificial intelligence, its capabilities and associated risks. Russian Orthodox Church Primate, opening the meeting, stressed the special importance of this issue not only for the present, but also for the future of all mankind.
His Holiness the Patriarch noted that the topic of artificial intelligence has long gone beyond the exclusively scientific discussion. It concerns every person who cares about their own lives, the fate of their loved ones, and the well-being of society.
Bishop Siluan of Peterhof, Chairman of the Synodal Commission on Bioethics, delivered an introductory speech on the topic "Artificial Intelligence: reality, risks, opportunities." The report was presented by the secretary of the commission, Archpriest Alexander Abramov. A.I. Avetisyan, Director of the Institute of System Programming, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, took part in the discussion as an invited expert.
Another issue on the agenda was the Patriarchal Bible Study Program. Metropolitan Evgeny of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye, Chairman of the Synodal Department of Religious Education and Catechesis, made a report on its content and implementation.
The meeting was attended by members of the Supreme Church Council, heads of synodal institutions and invited experts.
