On the Feast of the Nativity of Christ, Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia addressed the faithful with his traditional Christmas message, calling for peace, unity, and love among all people. He emphasized the importance of compassion and support for those in need.
In his message, the Patriarch reflected on the profound significance of Christmas – a celebration that divides human history into "before" and "after." He underscored that through the incarnation of the Son of God, the world has gained an unbreakable bond with the Divine, a gift that secures eternal life for every believer.
Patriarch Porfirije reminded the faithful that in today's world, many families and nations continue to suffer from conflicts and hardships, spending the holiday in exile and fear. He urged believers not to forget those who, like the Holy Family, are forced to seek refuge far from home.
"Today, many mothers and fathers, holding their children, flee from modern-day Herods, sharing the fate of the infants of Bethlehem. We pray for peace in the land where Christ was born, and throughout the world," the Patriarch stated, expressing concern over ongoing conflicts and bloodshed in places like Ukraine and Russia.
The Patriarch paid particular attention to the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, whom he described as "the most vulnerable and unprotected" on the European continent. He expressed solidarity with the region’s inhabitants facing persecution and threats, commending their courage and steadfast faith.
The message also included reflections on the upcoming 850th anniversary of the birth of Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Patriarch Porfirije highlighted Saint Sava’s role as a peacemaker, uniting his brothers and strengthening the nation during challenging times.
"Saint Sava reminded us that true peace is only possible through forgiveness and brotherly love. In the coming year, we must follow his example, striving for reconciliation and understanding despite our differences," the Patriarch emphasized.
Concluding his message, Patriarch Porfirije called on all believers to build bridges of understanding and love, rejecting aggression and violence as means of resolving conflicts. He stressed that the Church consistently advocates for dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.
"In the joy of Christ’s Nativity, let us embrace one another and glorify God, so that we may enter the New Year in peace and harmony together," the Patriarch concluded.
