Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia has honored renowned Serbian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer Emir Kusturica with the Order of St. Seraphim of Sarov, First Class. This prestigious award recognizes Kusturica's significant contribution to preserving traditional values in society. The announcement and congratulations were published on the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church.
In his message, Patriarch Kirill highlighted that Kusturica's work, embodying a unique "Balkan style," has captivated millions of viewers worldwide. The director’s films address profound themes such as the meaning of life, moral choices, and family values, blending deep symbolism with vivid artistic expression and warm humor.
The Patriarch noted that Kusturica not only inspires audiences through his art but also bears witness to Gospel ideals, strengthening traditional values through his creative endeavors.
According to RIA Novosti, Kusturica recently announced plans to visit Russia to work on a new project—a film adaptation of a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky. At celebrations marking his recent milestone, Kusturica expressed gratitude for the recognition of his work. He emphasized the importance of fostering ties between Russian and Serbian cultures and pledged to continue contributing to this shared mission.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also extended his congratulations, praising the filmmaker's role in promoting international understanding and friendship between nations. Representatives from the Russian Embassy and Rossotrudnichestvo in Serbia presented Kusturica with a gift—a bas-relief titled "Window to the East," symbolizing the spiritual kinship of the two peoples.
