On the feast of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, the day of remembrance of Equal-to-the-Apostles Tsar Constantine and his mother Tsarina Elena, the feast of the Cathedral of Karelian Saints, on June 3, 2026, Archbishop Varlaam of Makhachkala and Derbent performed the great consecration of the church in honor of the blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky on the territory of service in the village of Akhty of the Border Department of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation for the Republic of Dagestan.
After the consecration ceremony, Vladyka Varlaam congratulated the border guards on this historic event, and then led the Divine Liturgy service in the newly consecrated church.
His Eminence was assisted by the clergy of the Makhachkala diocese.
Special petitions were offered at the special litany. Archbishop Varlaam read the prayer for Holy Russia, which is performed in all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The clergy sang "Eternal Memory" to all the soldiers who "laid down their lives for the Fatherland."
In his sermon before Communion, Priest Grigory Fomin spoke about the feat of the heavenly patron of the newly consecrated church, the Blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky.
At the end of the service, Archbishop Varlaam congratulated the worshippers on receiving the Holy Mysteries of Christ and warmly thanked Lieutenant General S.Y. Popov, Colonel A.V. Bondarenko and all those whose efforts had built a church near the southernmost point of the Russian Federation named after the patron saint of the Russian army. Vladyka Varlaam donated the altar Gospel and the icon of St. Alexander Nevsky to the church.
At the end of the service, the head of the district administration, A.K.N. Palchaev, invited Archbishop Varlaam and the border guard officers to inspect the monument of federal significance - the fortress in the village of Akhty, built in 1839, and the dilapidated church on its territory. The head of the administration spoke about the project of complete restoration of the monument and assured that the historical architectural complex will be restored in the near future.
Communication between the military and the clergy continued over a meal in the canteen of the border guard service.
