French President Emmanuel Macron visited the historic Cetinje Monastery during his official trip to Montenegro, underscoring the cultural and spiritual significance of one of the country's most important Orthodox Christian sites.
President Macron was accompanied by Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović during the visit, according to the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral.
The delegation was welcomed by Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral, who guided the French president through the monastery and introduced him to its history and treasured relics. Following the tour, a meeting was held at the Metropolitanate’s residence, where participants discussed contemporary issues in bilateral relations as well as the role of religious and cultural heritage in modern society.
A significant part of the conversation focused on the longstanding historical ties between France and Montenegro. Metropolitan Joanikije emphasized that the friendship and alliance forged between the two nations during the First and Second World Wars continue to provide a strong foundation for cooperation today.
The metropolitan also noted that many prominent Montenegrin statesmen, military leaders, writers, and church figures received their education in French institutions, reflecting the deep cultural connections that have linked the two countries for generations.
During the meeting, Metropolitan Joanikije expressed confidence that Montenegro can make a meaningful contribution to the cultural and spiritual development of contemporary Europe. He highlighted the country's historical commitment to freedom, the defense of human dignity, and the willingness to make sacrifices in pursuit of higher ideals as enduring elements of Montenegro’s national heritage.
The Church leader also recalled the centuries-long role of the Serbian Orthodox Church in preserving Christian faith and cultural traditions in the territory of present-day Montenegro.
At the conclusion of the visit, President Macron thanked his hosts for their warm welcome and hospitality. As a commemorative gift, Metropolitan Joanikije presented the French leader with a replica of an early Christian liturgical paten known as the “Podgorica Cup.”
The original artifact was discovered at the site of the ancient Roman city of Doclea near modern-day Podgorica and is currently housed in the collections of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The visit highlighted both the religious significance of Cetinje Monastery and the enduring cultural ties between Montenegro and France, as the two countries continue to strengthen their diplomatic and historical connections.
