On October 10, 2025, Ukrainian authorities seized several key properties of the Volodymyr-Volynskyi Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). The buildings, including the cathedral, diocesan administration offices, and theological school, were taken under control by state officials. According to the Telegram channel Raskolam.net, the church complex was cordoned off by police, and faithful were not allowed near the area as state representatives conducted an "inventory of property."
Footage from the scene shows dozens of police vehicles surrounding the cathedral. Believers gathered outside the church, many of them arriving at night in an attempt to prevent the seizure of the religious sites. However, they were denied entry.
Eyewitnesses reported that inside the church, government officials and unidentified individuals were inspecting the premises and recording videos, all while the diocesan clergy were not involved in the proceedings.
This action follows growing reports of increased pressure on religious institutions in Ukraine, particularly on those associated with the UOC. The Volodymyr-Volynskyi Diocese, which oversees numerous parishes and theological schools, has faced intensifying scrutiny, with several of its properties undergoing inspections and forced re-registration processes in recent months.
The seizure has drawn significant concern from religious communities, as such actions represent the latest chapter in ongoing tensions between the Ukrainian government and the UOC, which has been under increasing scrutiny amid the broader political and religious struggles in the country.
