On August 28, 2025, the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, a Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Bukasa Island (Ssese Archipelago, Lake Victoria). The service took place in a temporary church dedicated to the Annunciation of the Theotokos, led by Priest Christophor Valusimbi, as reported by the website of the Patriarchal Exarchate in Africa.
The parish was established in 1982 and is recognized as the oldest Russian Orthodox parish in Black Africa. The local church has been under construction for over forty years, driven by the efforts of the priest and the community. Father Christophor personally collected stones for the building, walking over two kilometers uphill to gather materials.
"This is a story of faithfulness to God in the face of all adversities, about how the community has tirelessly glorified God for forty years under challenging conditions, practically without outside assistance," noted Hieromonk Siluan (Brown), the dean of the Eastern Church District in Uganda. "Father Christophor and the believers hope that one day the construction will be completed, and a functioning Orthodox church will always stand on the island, where everyone can find comfort and joy in Christ."
The movement towards Orthodoxy in Uganda began over 120 years ago, with the first visit by a hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church occurring in 1966, when Metropolitan Antoniy (Melnikov) visited the country. In memory of this event, the Russian parish in the capital, Kampala, was named in honor of Saint Anthony the Great by the blessing of the Patriarchal Exarch of Africa. The Russian Church was officially registered in Uganda in 2022. Today, Uganda is part of the South African Diocese of the Patriarchal Exarchate in Africa, with its see located in Johannesburg.
