Metropolitan Leonty of Voronezh and Liski has appealed to residents and believers across the region following a missile attack on the city of Voronezh that left five people dead and dozens injured, according to regional authorities.

In a statement issued after the attack, the senior Orthodox cleric expressed condolences to the families of those killed, pledged prayers for the wounded, and urged the faithful to remain united and steadfast in their faith during a time of tragedy.

Metropolitan Leonty highlighted the timing of the attack, noting that it occurred on June 22, the day Russia commemorates the anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, known internationally as the Eastern Front of World War II.

“There are victims and there is destruction,” the metropolitan said in his address. He added that the attack had not only caused damage to people and property but had also offended the memory of those who fought during the war years of 1941–1945.

The church leader said he was praying for the swift recovery of the injured and offered heartfelt condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy.

He also called on believers to seek spiritual strength and support through prayer, asking for peace, security, and healing for the region.

According to authorities in the Voronezh Region, air defense forces detected and destroyed several high-speed aerial targets over the city on June 22. Despite the interceptions, five people were killed and dozens sought medical treatment, with some victims reported to be in serious condition.

Officials said the attack caused damage to industrial facilities at a local enterprise, as well as residential buildings and vehicles. Emergency responders and municipal services continue to work at the affected sites.

Regional authorities have introduced a state of emergency in parts of Voronezh’s Zheleznodorozhny District and pledged support for families impacted by the attack.

The Voronezh Metropolis has encouraged worshippers to pray for the repose of those who lost their lives, the recovery of the injured, and the restoration of peace and stability in the aftermath of the incident.
