The Serbian Orthodox Church is witnessing a significant spiritual revival following decades of communist-era atheism, according to Metropolitan Irinej of Bačka, one of the Church’s most prominent theologians and bishops.
In an interview with the Greek broadcaster Pemptousia TV published on June 17, Metropolitan Irinej pointed to the recent visit of the Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos—one of the most revered relics in the Orthodox Christian world—to Belgrade as evidence of renewed religious devotion across the country.
The hierarch said the large number of worshippers who came to venerate the relic reflects what he described as a “revival of faith” in Serbia. Among the pilgrims, he noted, were many individuals who had previously identified as atheists or had even opposed the Church.
Reflecting on Serbia’s communist past, Metropolitan Irinej recalled the challenges faced by Orthodox Christians under an officially atheist system. Believers endured hardship, social pressure, and various forms of persecution, yet managed to preserve their religious identity, he said.
“Serbs strengthened their faith by passing through the era of atheism,” Irinej stated. He argued that this historical experience ultimately contributed to the spiritual renewal of society and encouraged many people to return to active church life.
The metropolitan also emphasized the need for continued “re-evangelization” of the Serbian people, calling for a renewed commitment to Christian values and a return to the spiritual traditions that have played a central role in the nation’s history.
Addressing the Church’s role in public life, Irinej stressed that its primary mission is spiritual rather than political. While the Church should not be responsible for resolving political issues, he said, it can exert a profound influence on society through the moral and spiritual transformation of individuals.
“If the Church fulfills its fundamental mission of helping people achieve inner renewal, many other issues begin to develop in the right direction,” he said.
Metropolitan Irinej is widely regarded as one of the leading theologians of the Serbian Orthodox Church. He is known for his contributions to Orthodox theology and his extensive pastoral work, combining a commitment to Church tradition with engagement in contemporary social issues.
