"A proposal to introduce school lessons on 'the value of human life before birth' is a step in the right direction, but at the same time, this idea requires serious study,” said Vladimir Legoyda, Head of the Synodal Department for the Russian Orthodox Church’s Relations with Society and Mass Media, on his Telegram Channel on Friday, January 14.

A suggestion to introduce school lessons on "the value of human life before birth" was put forward by Maria Studenikina, the director of the "House for Mom", run by the Orthodox church charity "Miloserdie" (Mercy) service. The initiative is aimed at reducing the number of abortions in Russia.

"I think that this is the right vector,” Legoyda pointed out. “But when it comes to addressing children on such a delicate issue, you need to think very seriously about the right approach and a way to present it to teenagers so as not to arouse their negativism, but to encourage them to take a closer look at these complex issues," Vladimir Legoyda wrote.

The representative of the Russian Orthodox Church also reported that Yana Lantratova, first deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Education, spoke out in favor of the initiative. However, according to Legoyda, Lantratova rightly noted that before introducing this kind of change, the parent community should be invited to discuss the issue, so that the parents’ opinion on this matter could also be heard and taken into account.

“I would very much like to see a frank, serious, and constructive discussion about family values,” Vladimir Legoyda concluded.
