Romania’s National Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church in the country, has been recreated in the virtual world of the popular video game Minecraft, project developers announced.
The digital reconstruction was created on the Orthocraft server and is designed to closely replicate the scale and structure of the real-life cathedral. According to the creators, the virtual model faithfully reproduces the interior space, central dome, icons, chandeliers, and key architectural details. The virtual cathedral is open for free exploration by all users on the server.
Orthocraft is a project dedicated to Orthodox Christian culture and is described by its creators as the world’s first Minecraft server focused exclusively on recreating churches, monasteries, and other religious landmarks. Participants can explore completed structures as well as contribute to the digital reconstruction of Christian cultural heritage.
The recreated building is the Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation in Bucharest, the main church of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Located next to the Palace of Parliament, it is the tallest Orthodox church in the world. Construction began in 2007 and lasted more than a decade, with the cathedral officially consecrated in the autumn of 2025. The church can accommodate up to 6,000 worshippers and has become a symbol of Romania’s contemporary religious and national identity.
Minecraft is one of the world’s most popular sandbox video games, allowing players to build complex three-dimensional structures using virtual blocks. Access to the Orthocraft server is free for all owners of a licensed version of the game.
